Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Woman with journal and notes from Therapy - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) by The Therapy Centre in Toronto, Oakville and Hamilton

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of therapy that aims to help individuals accept what is out of their control, and commit instead to actions that enrich their lives. ACT uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies, together with commitment and behaviour change strategies to increase psychological flexibility. The unique goal of ACT is to help individuals create a rich and meaningful life and develop mindfulness skills alongside the existence of pain and suffering. ACT aims to help individuals commit to actions that will assist in their long-term goals and live a life consistent with their values. Therapy sessions can involve a number of interventions, including techniques to help individuals change how they react to their thoughts and feelings, learn how to be present, and identify their most deeply held values.
