Alison Smethurst is a registered Social Worker with a Master’s degree in Social Work from Toronto Metropolitan University. Alison provides a genuine and empathetic approach while striving to create a safe space where individuals feel comfortable being their authentic self. She currently works in private practice with teens, adults, couples and families. She also works at the Child and Youth Mental Health Inpatient Unit at McMaster Children’s Hospital.
Alison has training in Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). Additionally, her training in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) and Emotion Focused Skills Training (EFST) allow her to help individuals understand the impact of their emotional experiences and how they can support their own healing through emotion processing.
Alison has experience working with children and adolescents with perfectionism, depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicidality in her role at McMaster Children’s Hospital. In addition, she works to support individuals, couples and families through a variety of challenges including life transitions, self esteem, workplace stress, perfectionism, sleep therapy, grief and loss as well as interpersonal and relationship difficulties. Alison has a special interest in working with parents with children who experience social-emotional and/or behavioural challenges and is certified to run Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) workshops.
Alison is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers.
