Eating Disorder Program
The clinicians at The Therapy Centre have substantial experience in treating individuals with eating disorders, including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and over eating. In particular, Dr. Maria Antoniou has worked for the past 15 years with individuals with eating disorders both in hospital programs and private practice and has trained at the Hospital for Sick Children and with the Maudsley Institute in family-based treatment for eating disorders. As well, Jackie Tapper-Atkinson has specialized in the treatment of eating disorders for the past 17 years at the Renfrew Center in Philadelphia, and in private practice in Oakville for the last 10 years.
The Therapy Centre employs a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of eating disorders. We work closely with our clients’ team including physicians, dieticians, psychiatrists or other health care providers as warranted. We use evidence-based and innovative therapeutic modalities to treat eating disorders.
- Family-Based Therapy (the Maudsley Approach – FBT) – In this approach with children and adolescents, we work to empower parents to take an active role in their child’s recovery and in the families’ recovery from this illness.
- Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) – EFT works to process emotions underling an eating disorder. It involves accessing emotion, tolerating and understanding emotion, transforming emotion and self-soothing. This is important in the treatment of eating disorders to help manage emotions that are often avoided with an eating disorder.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – CBT works to address thoughts, feelings, and cognitive distortions and aims to restructure these distortions, manage subsequent feelings and eliminate eating disorder behaviours.
