The March Break Activity Menu

1. Oakville: The Nature & Heritage Trail

  • The Activity: Explore the Gairloch Gardens or take a family walk through Bronte Creek Provincial Park.
  • The “Sanity” Benefit: Physical movement in nature is a proven way to lower cortisol levels and reset a child’s overstimulated nervous system.
  • Mastery Challenge: Have the kids participate in a “Photo Scavenger Hunt” to find five different types of local birds or trees.

2. Hamilton: The Waterfall & Museum Hub

  • The Activity: Visit the Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology or take a short hike to Tiffany Falls.
  • The “Sanity” Benefit: Engaging in “awe-inspiring” activities—like seeing a waterfall or massive historic machinery—promotes a sense of perspective and reduces the “brain fog” associated with being stuck indoors.
  • Mastery Challenge: After the visit, have the children draw a diagram of how they think a steam engine works to practice Behavioral Activation through learning.

3. Toronto: The Urban Explorer Day

  • The Activity: Visit the Riverdale Farm (which is free!) or explore the Evergreen Brick Works for outdoor play and nature trails.
  • The “Sanity” Benefit: Urban nature retreats provide a much-needed break from digital screens, helping to regulate the family’s shared circadian rhythms.
  • Mastery Challenge: Use the “First/Then” strategy: “First, we navigate the trail to the lookout point, then we can head to the local bakery for a treat”.

4. The “At-Home” Staycation Special

  • The Activity: Create an indoor “Living Room Campsite” using blankets, pillows, and flashlights.
  • The “Sanity” Benefit: Reimagining your existing space helps disrupt the “monotony” that often triggers irritability during March Break.
  • Mastery Challenge: Give the children the “Job” of being the campsite directors, responsible for the “schedule” and the “menu” (within reason!) to foster a sense of autonomy.

A Reminder for the Caregivers

While you are busy creating these moments for your children, do not forget your own Self-Love Contract. It is perfectly okay to choose the “At-Home” option if you are feeling low on emotional energy. Your children will benefit more from a relaxed parent than a stressed-out “tour guide”.

If you find that the stress of the break is bringing up deeper feelings of anxiety or burnout, remember that The Therapy Centre offers virtual and in-person support across all these locations to help you find your balance again.
