Autism Awareness Month: Understanding Autism and How We Can Help
April is Autism Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). At The Therapy Centre, we are proud to have therapists who specialize in autism assessments and providing support for individuals with autism. Whether you or a loved one have been recently diagnosed or are wondering if autism might be part of your story, we’re here to help.
What is Autism?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person perceives the world and interacts with others. Autism is called a spectrum because it presents differently in each individual. Some people with autism may require significant support in daily life, while others may be highly independent. Autism is not a disease or something that needs to be “cured”—it’s simply a different way of experiencing the world.
Common Symptoms of Autism
There is no exact formula for how autism will present from person to person, but there are some common characteristics, including:
- Social differences – Difficulty understanding social cues, challenges with eye contact, or differences in conversational patterns.
- Communication differences – Some individuals may have delayed speech development, while others may communicate in unique ways, such as through gestures or alternative communication methods.
- Repetitive behaviours and routines – A strong preference for routines, repetitive movements (such as hand-flapping or rocking), or intense interests in specific topics.
- Sensory sensitivities – Heightened or reduced sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or other sensory experiences.
- Executive functioning challenges – Difficulty with planning, organization, or adapting to changes in routine.
How is Autism Diagnosed?
Diagnosing autism requires a comprehensive assessment by professionals trained in autism evaluation. At The Therapy Centre, our specialized staff use a variety of tools to assess whether someone meets the criteria for an autism diagnosis. These tools may include:
- Clinical interviews – Gathering detailed developmental history and behavioural observations.
- Standardized assessments – Structured tools like the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) or the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R).
- Observational assessments – Watching how an individual interacts with others in different environments.
- Collaboration with caregivers and educators – Understanding behaviours and experiences across different settings to get a full picture of the client’s strengths and challenges.
The Benefits of Diagnosis and Therapy
Receiving an autism diagnosis can be life-changing—not just for the person with autism, but also for their entire support network. A diagnosis can provide clarity and open doors to services and accommodations that make life easier. Therapy and support can help individuals with autism build social skills, manage sensory sensitivities, and develop strategies to navigate the world more comfortably. At The Therapy Centre, we work with children, teens, and adults on the spectrum to provide tailored support that meets their needs.
